We just had two Menard's open here in Springfield MO this past late summer, and I'm looking forward to seeing what they have in the nursery come spring. (Didn't stock it at all last year since it was just opened). I'm wondering what kind of experiences anyone has had with them? Do they have a good variety of plants? More shrubs/trees or plants/flowers? Do they perform well for you and is the store good about returning dead plants? I'm assuming the prices are comparable to Lowes? Our Home depot here is pricier than the Lowes, and has less selection, I rarely go there.

I have never heard of Menards! But I do agree, HD is more expensive than Lowes here as well. And, they refuse to put plants that they have almost killed 'on sale' to allow people to 'rescue' them.

Could be that your HD has an agreement with wholesale nursery to get credit $ for sad plants. I do shop Lowe's "rescue" rack sometimes. My local Menard's - about the same selection as other big box stores. Maybe a little better than HD. Depends on the department manager and what the wholesale nursery has for supply. Cheaper prices but plants not as "happy". Again, depends on manager.

I don't think I have ever seen anything marked down at HD here. The lowes here marks down things regularly, but usually by 50%. I think they changed managers (?) cause a few years ago, they marked gobs of stuff down to like $1 or $2. Shrubs at like $4 or $5. It was great. They were sad but w tlc they did okay.

I am hoping that the Menards will have different varieties to choose from. Our lowes is getting better about having more harder to find things, variety and not just the same thing all the time. That is nice. We do have local nurseries here but they are far pricier than Lowes. I find they usually have more mature plants for more money. The plants at lowes are more like starting out, small, but the price is better.
Lowes guarantees their plants for 1 year, I don't know about menards. Most local nurseries here only 6 months, which doesn't put you through a full winter, so nope.

a lot of the more unusual things are grown by Costa Farms. They supply to both Home Depot and Lowes here. Also Monrovia. But to get really unusual stuff you have to look elsewhere, to botanical garden sales and places like that.

The big box stores have multiple plant suppliers who supply a list of available plants covered by a purchasing contract. Here, a lot of stuff comes out of MI wholesalers but also get the Monrovias, etc.

Lowes used to use Proven Winners, I think they still do (?) I always liked those. Monrovia has nice things sometimes, they can be pricey depending on what it is, And sometimes advertise things as 'special' when it is a common item you can easily find cheaper. Fancy name/packaging I guess. They do offer more variety usually.

We have Menard's, Home Depot and Lowe's available up here.

Menard's has the least variety available; Home Depot's variety , up here, has dropped by at least fifty percent, gotten more expensive; Lowe's splits the difference but is better in variety and price for some things as Menard's does not have it.
Rain barrels, or halves, are a bargain up here at Menard's.
When I did a major landscaping job we got a genuine break from Home Depot because of volume. They DO NOT do that up here any more. I am greatly disappointed in what they are now.

Walmart used to have the absolute best garden store till they moved into a larger building, now they are middling.
All spring garden shops up here have gone down hill , greatly, with a lot , including nurseries closing.

I go to two Menards - near my home.
They offered very cheap gladiola corms that when bags of 30 corms were on sale, with another 11% off, were about 9 cents a corm. A nice mix of colors. I soaked the corms overnight before planting. I planted a 100 foot row. Bouquets galore !
